Leap into Reading with the Leap Frog Tag Junior Reading System

You have heard me sing the praises of the Tag Reading System and all it has to offer your child's literacy development however literacy skills should be developed at a very young age and the Tag may not suit the needs of a book exploring two, three, or even four year old. Educators and parents have known for decades the significance of early introduction to books and book publishers--who have been publishing children's literature since the 15th century--also know this to be significant and have created children's board books knowing little busy hands require graspable and durable tomes!

Leap Frog wants the exciting benefits and enjoyment of the Tag system to be available to these blossoming little readers and accordingly created the Tag Junior. Again my admiration for this company's forethought and consideration of the needs of children of various ages and skill levels must be duly noted. Leap Frog is a company which continues to evolve and improve on their ideas! As a parent and educator I respect their efforts Leap Frog expends to create Fun well thought out learning toys.

The Tag Junior is a durably constructed, "person" shaped unit developed to be easily grasped a toddler's hands which are not yet adept at fine motor movement. Unlike the Tag, Tag junior requires less exact movements on book pages. A toddler need only stamp the page with the Tag Junior for reading, songs, and other auditory surprises to be activated. The Tag Junior also corresponds with children's board books rather than traditional paper paged volumes which means you need not worry over drool soaked, torn pages, or paper cuts on precious toddler hands.

Just as the Tag Reading System, the Tag Junior connects to your computer via USB so you can add the audio for various books you purchase and to allow you to track your child's learning progress. Tag Junior can also be programed to greet your child with his/her own name!
The gift of reading is a gift that last for a lifetime and Leap Frog's Tag Junior is a wonderful tool to start any child on this magical literary journey! One Northern Mama reader will win the quality Leap Frog Tag Junior Reading System {includes the tag junior reader and one book} and a Tag Junior Board Book {pre-selected}!

Rodney Carrington's "Make It Christmas" CD will make your holidays last!

No the holidays are not over yet! I just received Rodney Carrington's Christmas CD and you will want one in your hot little hands to add to your holiday music repertoire for the coming years!

Rodney Carrington is an amazing multi-talent! Comedian, actor, writer, and add singer to his gifts. You will never feel the same about Christmas music again! "Make It Christmas" reveals Rodney's serious side and evokes the true emotions of Christmas with such poignancy you will find yourself one minute basking in the warm and fuzzy, and the next find your body buzzing with goosebumps while your eyes sting with the welling of tears. What inspired this seemingly complete shift from Carrington's usual humour filled music? Rodney has been told countless times he has a great voice. Rodney says, "People hear my funny songs and always say that I have a great voice. They ask me why I don’t do some serious music. So, this record ain't got a funny song on it. It's a big-band, Frank Sinatra-type Christmas record; something I've always wanted to do.”

Though it is a crooning, big band style record it seems to be peppered with a little country-pop and a lot of holiday emotion! This is a strong record but I can definitely pick favourites based on personal preference! I love to feel, and look forward to the welling-up of strong emotions inspirational holiday music can awaken. "Camouflage And Christmas Lights", a heart-rending song embodying the experience of troops deployed overseas, away from family and traditional holiday celebration is a song which made me feel a depth and wealth of sentiment. I wept!

A friend's husband was serving in Afghanistan a couple years ago and this song reminds me of her experience, waiting, raising her children alone, observing holidays without her husband.

Watch this You Tube video set to "Camouflage And Christmas Lights" and tell me you wept no tears! This song spoke to many this Christmas and was a meaningful Christmas gift to military families!

Carrington's "Make It Christmas" is the perfect mix of traditional classics such as "White Christmas", "Winter Wonderland", and "Oh Holy Night", and new timely songs you'll love! My other favourites on this album David Foster's "Grown Up Christmas Wish", "Mary Did You Know", and "Presence of Love" for the heartfelt and "The Presents Under the Tree (Better Be For Me)" for a little humour and fun! Yes, practically the whole album! I reiterate this is an amazingly powerful album and Rodney Carrington may just have permanently prevented himself from being pigeon-holed as comedian alone!

Make It Christmas all over again purchase Rodney Carrington's "Make It Christmas" now. Enter to win a copy of "Make It Christmas" here at Northern Mama an amazing gift for yourself or someone you love!

Dear John~ A Novel By Nicholas Sparks ~ Review and Giveaway

As I slowly close this book I realize the fragility of love's fulfillment and cast my mind to my relationship and how thankfully in an unforgiving world, with life's distractions and disasters our love and relationship has endured and only gained strength.

I do not tend to read romance novels but Nicholas Sparks does not write romance novels but rather love stories. Stories with the breadth of reality contained within their plots and characters. Sparks' novels are believable, his characters real to anyone who reads them and I suspect this is why six of his books including this one, Dear John, have been adapted to the screen. Each story touches a chord, each character becomes a friend, a relative, the boy or girl next door, perhaps even reminds one a bit of oneself.

John is a young man with no future and a father he cannot seem to relate to. But when he discovers the military and enlists in the army he finds himself on a straight path, not exactly sure of his goals but at least aware he has something to grasp at. It is a chance meeting with a special young lady during John's furlough which changes his life forever. Transformed by a love which haunts him, John plans to finish his tour of duty and return to marry Savannah, the girl of his dreams. As in real life love is not always so simple. John and Savannah struggle with being apart and just as they see John's tour end approaching the unforseen changes everything-9/11! As John chooses between love and duty to his country, Savannah chooses unwittingly between loneliness and living a life fulfilled.

John and Savannah's love recreates their lives, somehow makes them better people in the face of horrendous odds, and it endures despite their relationship's demise. Dear John redefines what we consider love to be. It tests love's boundaries and questions its true meaning. Insightful, bittersweet, and poigniant Sparks sets a tale of young love against the backdrop of harsh reality only to find a silver lining ripped from the pain of unfulfilled relationships. Sparks is a master of the modern love story and stories of the heartrending inner struggles of humanity!

Northern Mama loves tugging at your emotions and heartstrings and thanks to Hachette Book Group will be giving away 5 copies of Dear John by New York Times Bestselling author Nicholas Sparks!

my Virtual Tutor makes the Nintendo DS Learning Fun!

In a world of video games it's exciting to find a game that teaches children to read in an interactive, and exciting new way! My Virtual Tutor, developed by 1st Playable Productions and Mentor Interactive, combines a young child's new found love of the Nintendo DS system with educational games parents desire and the fun of play kids appreciate.

My Virtual Tutor - Reading has been tested with over 1200 students and was determined on average to increase reading scores 50% over those not using this software. my virtual tutor concentrates on five reading skill areas--Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Comprehension, Fluency, and Vocabulary--and includes four modes of play--Read to Me {including 6-8 interactive books}, I Can Read {featuring word-based activities}, Interactive {clickable animation, and quizzes}, and Paint {creativity and illustration}. The different modes and exercises advance along with the player creating an individualized literacy program perfect for the user. My Virtual Tutor also provides a parent mode to make it easier for parents to track their child's progress!

It is Mentor Interactive's goal "to provide a digital solution to children's literacy around the globe." Sound boring? It's not! My 5 year old daughter Bronwynn played this new game for days on the DS excited by her progress and thoroughly enjoying the vocabulary and word based activities. It's funny how just using the right format can add a new dimension of enthusiasm to learning! my virtual tutor games matches curriculum for Pre-Kindergarten to second grade-- the most influential time in a child's life for reading development. Bronwynn received the my virtual tutor for Kindergarten to first grade which focuses on sound blends, rhyme, patterns, and vowel recognition. Bronwynn's favourite activity was unscrambling letters to form words.

I am a parent but I am also an educator and I believe the educational programming of my virtual tutor, a teaching system developed at the University of Colorado Boulder Center for Spoken Language Research, is excellent and effective but the aspect of my virtual tutor I found most impressive was the encouraging and supportive nature of the virtual tutor instructor! Guided through the games by an animated tutor a child receives encouraging words, and repeated information when needed. Unlike some learning games which seem too critical causing frustration to bubble up inside a child, my virtual tutor's supportive tone and positive reinforcement provides a relaxed, safe, and "warm and fuzzy", on-the-go learning environment while providing substantial reading results!

My Virtual Tutor - Reading was recently the recipient of the honoured "Dr. Toy's Best Picks" award ! Dr. Toy is a Child Development Specialist and toy industry professional who focuses of high quality, creative, educational products which are safe, socially responsible, priced affordably and first and foremost designed with the needs of children in mind. My Virtual Tutor meets this criteria to the letter! It is the perfect addition to your child's DS library and a fabulous gift idea. Give the gift of reading fun to a special child in your life!

You can purchase my virtual tutor - Reading at game retailers throughout North America for the suggested retail price of $29.99. One Northern Mama reader can also win a my virtual tutor game here!

    Wayward Reminiscences and Nostalgic Nonsense!

I am a memory keeper! Yes, I hoard mementos and photos like they are life's essentials. Over the years I have moved several times and as I prepare for the possibility of moving once again I have started to weed through back closets in the desperate search for things to part with! While I have been able to rid myself of certain uninspiring and un-sentimental riff-raff I have found myself confronted by moments of nostalgia and reminiscences as I stumble upon so many sentimental keepsakes.

I found an enormous white box in a back closet and at first became perplexed. After perusing my backlogged memory I realized this white box enclosed my wedding dress! It had been stashed at my parents for many years until my mom decided while cleaning house that I could store it myself so it made the journey from Ontario to Saskatchewan. The sight of this non-descript box brought with it a flood of wedding memories.

I remember the excitement of wedding planning and the frustrations. What I remember most and love about weddings is the way you can put your own signature on the event through all the minutia. From wedding favours to the cake and flowers. One now makes these choices based on personality and individual preferences.
My husband was the type of groom to be involved. He was beside me at every turn but I think his favourite part of the entire experience was helping to choose the wedding favours that our guests would we hoped take home to remember the day we shared. We were eager to find unique wedding favours which would represent who we were and as two people enamoured not only by each other but by the beauty of the natural world we chose to give saplings. These evergreen saplings were the perfect way to embody our mind set, represent our ever lasting love and provide guests with something tangible to take with them.

Many of the guests nurtured and planted these trees. Our parents over the years have occasionally made mention of how relatives' trees were doing but we've lost track lately as to whether any are still alive and flourishing. I like to think many are and that perhaps our union even helped the environment just a little!

Funny I should remember such a seemingly silly detail as wedding favours when my mind wanders back to that day. I have so many other beautiful wedding memories I remember tearfully giving a speech in which I quoted Wuthering Heights, the love I felt and still feel overwhelmingly daily for my husband, and enjoying a rousing reception filled with the revelry shared with family and friends.

I've been married for over 12 years and times have changed. My sister married only a couple of years ago and though I was in the wedding party I live miles away so the distance prevented me from helping with a lot of the nuanced details including the crazy tasks of bridal shower planning which in itself I guess can now include the craziness of bridal shower favours, beyond the party games and food alone! From a far I sent links to online wedding sites and ideas for centerpieces, favours and the like so I could feel part of the drama! Now I hold the album of her wedding, and continue to reminisce...it's the equivalent experiences of others that often recall ones own special moments!

    Happy Holidays!!

I'm surrounded by the glimmer of fresh snow, the trees white with hoarfrost, the holiday sparkling with the joys of my family! Living far from extended family has always made Christmas an intimate affair. In the arctic we created our own festive family of friends but the arctic has a unique way of drawing people together. Since moving south we have experienced a quiet solitary holiday season--well as quiet as one can be for a family of five. Often we enjoy the time unencumbered by family obligations and extreme festive party preparations but there are also times when we become a bit lonesome for the social gatherings and the shared camaraderie of family and dearly cherished friends. This year was filled with this dichotomy of emotion!
Despite this our children have known no other way to celebrate the season so we feel reassured by their glowing and untarnished experience of Christmas tradition.

I can honestly say it will be a blue moon of a Christmas Eve when my children actually sleep! This year Santa found it even harder than usual to journey down our chimney without being caught! Sleepless and filled with excitement my children defied their exhaustion and heavy eyes all night. We did manage however to preserve the magic of Santa and Christmas Eve, though it was by the skin of our teeth. We even caught Santa on film taking a nap by our fireplace thanks to iCaughtSanta and CatchACharacter! Santa has also become a bit senile in his old age because lo and behold he left his spectacles by our fireplace, a white glove on the floor, he tore his jacket in the fireplace doors, and a button. The reindeer dropped a bell in our doorway as they munched the celery my children left out and I had to sweep up magic snowy footprints and hoof prints from my floors! The children were thrilled and my daughter asked that she bring Santa's belongings to school before we pack them up to be mailed back to Santa!

Santa was not too old and forgetful to remember to bring just what everyone had been wishing for. He even was thoughtful enough to bring a gift that even mommy and daddy could enjoy, Rockband 2! And yes, though the kids are having fun with it mommy and daddy are addicted and are experiencing delusions of grandeur.

I have obviously taken a little time from blogging to truly share the holidays with my family. My husband actually had Christmas off work for the first time in several years so I've wanted to make the most of it. The only real low of the season...my son broke his collar bone in a sledding mishap the second to last day of school before the holidays! After a rushed visit to the medical clinic he's felt a little incapacitated, and the likelihood is that the new hockey net Santa brought will be idle for a couple of months!

    HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

The 39 Clues Search for the Keys Game

If you've been a Northern Mama follower from my blogs inception, or if you've spent time perusing my archives you may have come across a 30 Clues Book Review. Scholastic conceived of a fabulous new adventure book series for young adults. Each book in the series has been written by a different highly acclaimed children's author and includes authors such as Gordon Korman, Patrick Carman, Peter Lerangis and Jude Watson to name a few. My son has now read every book in the series and is eagerly waiting with baited breath for each new release!

What's special about the 39 Clues series is the way Scholastic has packaged these books with the newly popular action card collecting craze and the online world modern children are interacting with and becoming increasingly savvy in. 39 Clues collectible cards unlock online clues and keys when you decipher codes, solve puzzles and add them to your online account. Children become part of the ongoing mystery and collect points and clues toward exciting prizes.

Now this exciting new literacy based adventure has sparked the inspiration for puzzles and a fabulous new educational board game has been created by University Games. The 39 Clues Search for the Keys Game is filled with high-flying world travel, and a dash of history and world geography this game is the perfect compliment to the 39 Clues series and provides a great learning experience for children 8+ and adults alike.

My husband and I played the game with our 39 Clues loving son Gabriel and thoroughly enjoyed the play experience. Challenging and enthralling I'd recommend this game for children 8 and up and as a parent and educator, highly recommend the 39 Clues series, cards, and online site!

The 39 Clues is education and literature at it's best and would make a great interdisciplinary classroom adventure for any language arts class, incorporating and encompassing geography, mathematics, science and language in a way that is exciting, dramatic and mysterious!

Buy the 39 Clues Search for the Keys Game today!!

Smartknit Kids - Seamless Sensitivity Socks

If my 5 year old had her way she'd go naked. Waistbands pinch, underwear rides up, sweaters are itchy and sock seams bulge, feeling like pebbles beneath her feet. Yes, there are children who are exceedingly sensitive and children's clothing is often not made with total comfort in mind. SmartKnitKids believes life's little irritations should not include socks with uncomfortable, lumpy bumpy seams.
Created with kids' sensitivities in mind Smartknit Kids seamless sensitivity socks are form-fitted to hug feet rather than bunching up and Smartknit Kids patented seam-free process produces a smoth, comfortable sock which my kids found super soft and cozy. Sometimes it's the simple ideas that make quality products and Smartkit Kids has found a simple solution to the simply annoying!
Once Smartknit feet are comfy, hygienic and happy feet. Smartknit Kids socks are antimicrobial and wick away moisture to provide your feet with a healthy podiatric environment and their "heelless" design allows a longer lasting fit for your ever-growing children.

Accepted by the Podiatric Medical Association SmartKnitKIDS socks promote foot health but Knit-Rite--the SmartKnit company--is also dedicated to fulfilling the needs of those overwhelmed by physical sensitivities meeting the special needs of those with autism and other disorders. Knit-Rite even donated 90 pairs of socks to an autistic man who had his disappear from his apartment laundry facility!

Wii EA Play- Littlest Pet Shop

    Hasbro started a collectible craze when they designed the adorable Littlest Pet Shop characters. It was as though they had read my youngest daughter's mind when they created them. My daughter Bronwynn is the greatest animals fan I know and no animal is exempt from her love and affection {though she may prefer to adore snakes from a slight distance!}

Bronwynn is not only an animal lover however but a young video game connoisseur. EA Play has produced a Wii game ideal from Bronwynn's encompassing interests. The Wii Littlest Pet Shop Friends game allows children to select their favourite pets as they plan and look for party surprises while planning the party of the year! The adventure builds as they navigate through the new Little Pet Shops town.
Adorable graphics and new fun mini-games and pet accessorizing appeals to young children my girls 5 and 7 were especially enamoured by this game. A directional arrow guides your pet to tasks to make it easier to complete their planning goals.

My pre-literate 5 year old uses the arrows as a way of compensating when she cannot read the instructions on her own for the latest task. She loves this but I think she enjoys the interactive play experience of Littlest Pet Shops Friends more with us and her older siblings there to read the animals' conversations to her. Exciting elements of the game include: playing games to collect Kibble coins used to buy new accessories to customize the styles of your pets, inviting pets to the big pet shop party you are eagerly preparing and planning throughout the game and the multi-player game modes which allow a friend to join in the fun and activity!
Bronwynn and Emma's favorite part is collecting flowers, crystals and tennis balls as they romp around the town and the fun baking activities (much cleaner than the real thing!).

Available for the Nintendo DS and the Wii Littlest Pet Shop Friends can be enjoyed at home or on the go!

EA Play and Wii are pushing play and with the Littlest Pet Shop Friends they are also pushing cute--my daughters love that!

Reporting For Duty: A Day at the White House ~ A Children's Activity Book Package Review and Giveaway!

Last week as I watched Oprah's White House Christmas special I was struck by the utter magic and fascinating history embedded in the walls and foundation of the U.S. presidential residence. Though I am Canadian I believe it is a significant benefit that children be given the opportunity to learn what they can about other countries, their histories, and their political and government systems. Washington DC is rich in history! I remember visiting the White House during a high school trip to Washington and I can still recall the awe it inspired.

Bo is not the only dog in the White House...oh no, there is also Barkley Reporting for Duty! H.K. Gilbert has dreamed of writing children's books and she has now written the wonderfully interactive activity book "Reporting For Duty: A Day in the White House" about a secret service dog named Barkley. Barkley has been assigned the daunting task of guarding the White House and protecting the American first family!

Barkley leads children through the busy life of the White House, and provides children with a tour of the inside workings of the White House! Filled with fun facts and history, Reporting for Duty miraculously makes learning important historical information entertaining, exciting and enjoyable. It is often rare to find a book which can hold the interest of all my children with their ages ranging from 5-9 but Gilbert has a gift. Gilbert has the gift of creating a story which weaves factual information with a lovable and exciting character attractive to children and provides children with colouring and drawing activity breaks avoiding long narratives!

H.K. Gilbert is an advocate for literacy and a strong believer, as I am in the power of reading with your children everyday whether it be 5 minutes or an hour the combination of bonding and exposure to print is irreplaceable! "Reporting for Duty" is the perfect sit-down-together activity book for parents and children or could be utilized as a fabulous classroom resource. I truly enjoyed sitting down with my children to read Barkley's story and work through the activities. I learned along side my children and we chuckled together at Barkley's canine references and antics.

"Next we have the Oval Office. This room is not only my favourite shape, but is also a very important room."

"I enjoy reporting for duty in this room because it's the coziest room in the White House. When I've had a "ruff" day, I like to end my secret service duties by shedding my coat and curling up by the fire." (Gilbert 2009: 16)

"The next room, which cats love, is the Fish Room. This room has also been called the Roosevelt Room because President Franklin Roosevelt displayed fishing mementos and an aquarium in here... I carefully count each and every fish to make sure they're still in the aquarium, but I must say, counting the fish sure does make a secret service dog thirsty! I also make sure the most important rule of all is followed: NO CATS ALLOWED." (Gilbert 2009:17)

Care to visit the White House with your children? H.K. Gilbert is offering one Northern Mama reader a book basket filled with a copy of Reporting for Duty, Free box of crayons, and other fun filled surprises that all have to do with the White House! But what you will really be winning is an activity that will create a special moment in time and learning between yourself and your child!

EA Games~ Wii Hasbro Family Games Night 2

Traditional family game nights take a new twist with the Wii and EA Games Hasbro Family Game Night 2! The always charismatic Mr. Potato Head hosts your evening of fine family fun and makes old classics new favourites through the kinesthetic interactive entertainment of Wii technology. Hasbro Family Game Night 2 allows four people to play against each other in 5 popular Hasbro games--the toppling, suspense action of Jenga, the hand steadying surgical practice of Operation and the wit and strategy of Connect 4 x 4 combined with the eye popping I-Spy of Pictureka! and the actions sequences of bop it!
When my kids and I slid Hasbro Family Game Night into our Wii we were welcomed by the familiar yet changing face of Mr. Potato Head. Set in a TV game show format you can customize the game by changing the game room theme, and rearranging Mr. Potato Head's appearance! Win and collect parts for the coveted golden potato.

Hasbro Family Game Night 2 is the perfect game for family gatherings this holiday season and will bring your family together year round as they ooh and ah over each suspense filled move and laugh at each others fumbles and bumbles. The weekend we received this game my son happened to be hosting a friend to a sleepover and all that night and next morning was packed with Hasbro game action! Our living room was filled with the sounds of laughter, cheers, and jeers. A fabulous party highlight is the opportunity to play in Game show mode which allows you to compete against each other in games randomly chosen by the spin of a wheel!

Everyone will have their personal favourites. My 9 year old son enjoys the fast paced challenge of image hunting in Pictureka. Definitely not as easy as one may think! My daughter Emma, age 7, proclaims her favourite is Connect 4 x 4 the newest take on a classic game of strategy and let's face it a little luck! My 5 year old daughter, Bronwynn, thinks Operation "Rocks" but admits it's pretty tricky for a surgeon as young as herself! Finally, I am partial to the suspenseful and wobbly, nerve racking action of Jenga. My hubby loves games period so asking his favourite is probably a moot point!
I personally love seeing recognizable classics revisited with a new digital twist that breaths new life into them for the modern kid in a modern age. Though admittedly I will never tire of traditional board games which will never be replaced! EA Games brings traditional games to life and adds a new buzz of excitement to family entertainment and togetherness!

Hasbro Family Game Night 2 is rated E for everyone and for the Wii carries an MSRP of $39.99. Hasbro Family Game Night 2 is also available in the Nintendo DS format.

Waterpik Ultra Dental Water Jet ~ Review and Giveaway

While living in the arctic it was often a huge chore just trying to get a dental appointment. The dentist would fly in ever so many months and then the waiting list to be seen would be full before word even reached you. Needless to say though we had dental care it was a little more difficult to receive regular check ups. After moving south we had a lot of catching up to do and the dentist voiced the concern many of us hear, the horrors of plaque build up!! It's not the plaque we must fear but what it does to our gums causing gingivitis.

Waterpik has a solution to your dental hygiene needs that works like flossing but is 93% more effective! The Waterpik Ultra Dental Water Jet we received to review has changed the way we view dental care! I have great teeth but I also have way too many. I have every wisdom tooth possible and though I like to think it represents my erudition I know all it really does it make flossing a seemingly impossible frustration. The Waterpik Ultra Dental Water Jet has made flossing obsolete and my dental regime guilt free. Until now I thought it was an impossibility to duplicate the fresh from the dentist feeling but the Dental Water Jet offers just that!

After using the Waterpik Ultra Dental Water Jet for the first time I pulled the floss from my drawer to test the waterpik results. It was amazing to see how little plaque remained to floss. When we first received the Dental Water Jet I was a little concerned that I would find it frustrating to use. I often hate learning how to use new gadgets with all their ins-and-outs but the Dental Water Jet proved simple to use and effective. The Waterpik Dental Jet is a fabulous hygiene investment. It removes bacteria deep between teeth and below the gum line where brushing and flossing will not reach, and massages and stimulates gums to help prevent gingivitis and improve oral health.

Do you have a child with braces? I remember having braces as a teen and how difficult a task it was to clean my teeth effectively and flossing? Impossible! The Waterpik Ultra Dental Water Jet is a great solution to such dental worries.

The Ultra Dental Water Jet comes complete with 2 Standard Jet Tips, a Tongue Cleaner, Pik Pocket Tip, an Orthodontic Tip, and a Toothbrush Tip. Perfect for all your dental hygiene requirements! What a fabulous gift this holiday season and you can save $5.00 on your Waterpik Dental Water Jet purchase by visiting the Waterpik site and printing out the provided coupon!
